Recently, a survey of inpatients in 17 general hospitals in Shanghai showed that nearly one-third of the causes of acute renal failure originated from drugs. Among nephrotoxic drugs, antibiotics accounted for the first place (48%). In this regard, Prof. Yan, the vice president of the Chinese Medical Association's Nephrology Branch, told the Life Times reporter: “The results of this survey in Shanghai are not individual cases. The survey we conducted in Beijing is very similar.”
Professor Yan has conducted an investigation into acute renal failure in hospitalized patients from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital of the Ministry of Health from 1993 to 2007. In the survey, antibiotics and sulfonamides ranked first. In the second place, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were consistent with the results of this survey. The survey also showed that the number of acute renal failure caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is increasing, accounting for 26.1% from 1993 to 1997 and rising to 30.3% from 2003 to 2007.
"In the two surveys in Beijing and Shanghai, two points are particularly noteworthy." Professor Yan said that, first of all, recent studies in foreign countries have shown that although acute renal failure caused by antibiotics and sulfonamides is declining, adefovir, Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir are increasing. "At present, although the number of antiviral drugs used in China is not as high as in the West, its kidney damage is a problem that deserves the attention of Chinese medical workers and the West has risen."
In the third place is the contrast agent, which is mainly used in various angiography or interventional examinations and treatments. Professor Yan stressed that the nephrotoxicity of these drugs deserves the attention of doctors.
At the end of the interview, Prof. Yan expressed his feelings to the reporter and appealed: “The medical workers and the public must have a clear understanding of the drug kidney damage. Do not take the antibiotics for the cold, the pain medications are free to take, and the prescriptions are special. Believe in, forgetting the drug's three-point poison', so that our kidneys are protected from unnecessary threats and damage."
