A new Australian study says that for skin and oral squamous cell carcinoma, if a protein can be left in cancer cells, it can help prevent cancer cells from becoming resistant.

Squamous cell carcinoma is more common in areas covered by squamous epithelium, such as the skin, mouth and esophagus.

The University of Queensland in Australia has announced that its researchers have found that a protein called E2F7 has an important effect on cell resistance in skin and oral squamous cell carcinoma. In normal cells, this protein stays in the nucleus and prevents the cells from becoming resistant; in cancerous cells, the protein leaves the nucleus, causing the cells to become less sensitive to the drug.

Nicholas Sanders, an associate professor at the University of Queensland, said they found a new drug that leaves E2F7 in the nucleus, making cancer cells sensitive to chemotherapeutic drugs and improving the efficacy of squamous cell carcinoma.
