A US survey found that many breast cancer patients with high risk of related genetic mutations have not received genetic testing, and genetic testing and genetic counseling do not match actual medical needs. Genetic testing can detect the presence of mutations in both BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that are strongly associated with breast and ovarian cancer. Women who know they carry the relevant genetic variants can choose to have regular screening and, if necessary, remove the breast or ovaries.
A research team led by Stanford University School of Medicine reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that they surveyed more than 2,500 patients with early-stage breast cancer to see if they wanted genetic testing and whether they had been tested. It was found that about two-thirds of the respondents indicated that they wished to receive genetic testing, but only one-third of them had tested; 80% of those with a higher risk of genetic variation wanted to undergo genetic testing, but only half of them had received testing. .
The survey also showed that about 56% of respondents who did not receive genetic testing attributed the cause to the doctor and did not give them any advice. The survey found that genetic counseling is often absent, and many respondents lack understanding of the health risks associated with genetic variation.
