Lack of compassion is the most common feature of mental patients, but because of the complexity of emotions, this problem has plagued scientists for many years.
Now researchers in Brazil not only point out areas of the brain that have experienced experiences, but they also find ways to increase compassion.
Combining brain scanning and emotional feedback techniques, they help participants to notice and develop good and gentle emotions.
This study is the first to use scanning technology to locate sympathetic sensory regions throughout the brain. Previous studies have only found a single brain region associated with a particular emotion.
In order to map the sympathy, the Brazilian team used fMRI for brain scans while 25 participants were asking their emotional questions.
Each participant was asked to speak a memory of compassion that they thought was important. They are also asked about moments they feel proud, have neutral emotions or have no emotions.
Professor Jorge Moll then used a computer to identify patterns of brain activity associated with these emotions.
Once the software is trained to capture these patterns, volunteers are required to control and maintain these ideas and feelings.
Moll then gives these people feedback on how to enhance these emotions based on real-time brain scans and activities.
The more successful the subject maintains and develops their compassion, the clearer the resulting image will be.
Giving the participants feedback on their brain patterns can strengthen them.
But Moll emphasizes that there is still a lot of work to do before it can treat personality disorders and developmental diseases such as autism.
Subsequent trials also need to observe the differences in the brains of mental patients.
