A new study in the United States suggests that taking olive oil supplements (mainly olive oil) can help offset the adverse effects of air pollution on blood vessels.
Yan Haiyan, principal investigator of the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Health and Environmental Impact Laboratory, who is responsible for the study, said that endothelial dysfunction is considered a risk factor for clinical cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis such as heart disease and stroke. Olive oil and fish oil are known to have positive effects on vascular endothelial dysfunction. For example, olive oil can increase tissue plasminogen activator and promote the decomposition of blood clots.
To this end, Yan Haiyan and colleagues recruited 42 healthy adults and randomly divided them into three groups, taking olive oil supplements, fish oil supplements and placebo for 4 weeks, 3 grams per day. Then, 42 people breathed fine particles at an average concentration of about 253 μg/m 3 of contaminated air for two hours.
Studies have shown that in the placebo control group and the fish oil supplement group, brachial artery blood flow-mediated relaxation was significantly reduced after respiratory air pollution, while the olive oil supplement group did not change significantly. Radial artery-mediated diastolic reduction means endothelial dysfunction.
After exposure to contaminated air, the tissue-type plasminogen activator involved in the breakdown of blood clots in the olive oil supplement group immediately increased for up to 20 hours. In addition, olive oil also improves blood parameters associated with vasoconstriction and fibrinolysis. Fish oil has no effect on endothelial function and fibrinolysis.
Yan Haiyan said: "Our research is still in progress. If these results are confirmed in further research, the use of this supplement may provide a safe, low-cost means of offsetting the health effects of some air pollution. â€
