Recently, the National 863 Program and the Guangdong Provincial Key Science and Technology Program—the world's first “new generation of human-source cell-combined bioartificial liver” were successfully developed at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University and won 9 national patents. At present, the project has successfully produced the first new bio-artificial liver prototype, which is about to enter the clinical trial stage.

For patients with severe hepatitis and liver failure, the current domestic treatment methods are mainly medical treatment and liver transplantation, but the drug treatment effect is not satisfactory, and the mortality rate is as high as 80% to 90%.
