Recently, researchers have discovered that new genetic markers may help predict whether estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer patients are likely to benefit from tamoxifen treatment. The study was published in Cancer Research on July 15. In the magazine.
The Dutch Cancer Institute Hendrika M. Oosterkamp and his colleagues performed large-scale functional deletion gene screening in ZR-75-1 luminal breast cancer cells to identify candidate genes that cause tamoxifen resistance. The researchers found that the loss of ubiquitinating enzyme USP9X function can offset the efficacy of tamoxifen in preventing cancer proliferation.
In the presence of tamoxifen, the differentially expressed gene USP9X can be used to determine that patients with ERα-positive breast cancer experience a poor prognosis after undergoing tamoxifen-assisted therapy. However, in breast cancer patients who did not receive endocrine therapy, no correlation was found between gene signature and patient survival.
Overall, the findings determined that the gene signature USP9X could be used as a candidate biomarker for breast cancer patients in response to tamoxifen treatment.
