The Chinese Academy of Sciences experts developed a rapid detection instrument for esophageal cancer. The result was 3 minutes.

Release date: 2016-12-14

On the 12th, the reporter learned from the Hefei Institute of Material Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the medical physics center experts independently developed a real-time online detection of exhaled mass spectrometer. The examinee only needs to take a breath and can detect whether he or she is suffering within 3 minutes. Esophageal cancer has a clinical trial accuracy rate of 85% to 90%.

The research results were recently published in the international academic journal Journal of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases. It has reached the domestic leading level in the rapid detection technology of esophageal cancer, and it is also a major trend in the development of rapid non-invasive screening technology for cancer in the world.

According to experts, the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer are ranked eighth and sixth in malignant tumors, respectively. The incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer in China are among the highest in the world, with an estimated annual incidence of 470,000 and a death toll of about 370,000. At present, the clinical examination of esophageal cancer mainly relies on X-ray barium meal, CT scan, endoscopic/biopsy, cytology and other methods. These routine examinations require radiation/invasion or invasiveness, and are not suitable for physical examination or high-risk population screening. In order to find early esophageal cancer, it is especially important to let patients get early treatment, improve the cure rate, reduce the mortality rate, and develop new techniques for esophageal cancer screening.

Because of its safety, non-invasiveness, simplicity, and high acceptability, breath detection has always been a hotspot in the field of disease diagnosis. However, most studies follow the sampling bag exhalation sampling and chromatographic mass spectrometry offline analysis method. The potential problem is that the sampling bag is easy to cause call. Gas components are contaminated or even lost, and chromatographic mass spectrometry requires about 2 hours. Because of the difficulty of quality control, the cumbersome process, and the slow analysis speed, this method is difficult to meet the requirements of screening for rapid detection.

The Department of Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry, Department of Medical Physics, Hefei Institute of Material Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hefei Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have independently developed a real-time online detection of exhaled mass spectrometers, and conducted a comparative study on exhalation testing between esophageal cancer patients and healthy volunteers.

This exhalation mass spectrometer completes the direct measurement of exhalation of an inspected person within 3 minutes and gives the result, without the need for sampling bag sampling and pre-treatment such as concentration. Through the expiratory mass spectrometry detection of 29 esophageal cancer patients and 57 healthy people in Hefei Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the researchers found that seven exhaled mass spectrometry characteristic ions that distinguish esophageal cancer were used to identify whether the accuracy of esophageal cancer was reached. 85%-90%. The results of this study are expected to provide a high-throughput non-invasive detection technique for esophageal cancer screening and assisted diagnosis.
