Using Transgenic Technology to Make Fruits More Salt Tolerant

The Northeastern Forestry University's Saline-alkali Research Center for Biological Resources and Environment recently succeeded in extracting the salt-tolerant genes from a common plant, and through genetic transformation, the plant has a strong salt-tolerant ability. According to Liu Shenkui, director of the research center, the name of the study was “cultivation of new varieties of drought-resistant, saline-alkali-resistant forest grasses”, and it was the use of plant genetically modified technology to solve the problems of saline-alkali lands based on the plants themselves. The sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate alkalis have a pH of 9 or higher, which is much higher than that of the sodium chloride saline-alkaline land along the beach, and the plant growth environment is extremely poor. Tests have shown that plants that have been genetically transformed have strong saline-alkaline resistance and can grow fruits and vegetables on sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate bases.
