A new mobile app will prevent people in poor areas from becoming blind.
Scientists have developed a new application, the Pocket Ophthalmologist, which can perform eye exams for people around the world.
This portable eye exam kit (PEEK) can be downloaded to a mobile phone to perform a basic eye exam.
The results of the examination can be stored on the phone and sent to an ophthalmologist for analysis. This revolutionary application has now been inspected by 5,000 people in Kenya. Developers hope this will help those who have a risk of blindness due to impaired vision.
The system can even provide data for space exploration in Antarctica. Data released by the World Health Organization (WHO) show that there are 285 million people with visual impairment or blind people in the world, more than 90% of whom are in poor countries. At the same time, WHO believes that approximately 4/5 of the cases are preventable.
Researchers at the University of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have launched the application, which has been tested in 10 schools and villages in Kenya.
A PEEK spokesperson said: "We want to simplify visual inspection through redefinition of mobile phones and tablets. We have created some innovative tests. Many children learn badly because of undiagnosed vision problems, and we give them the opportunity to realize their potential. At present, clinicians rarely go to school to screen their children's vision problems."
The application is easy to implement and inexpensive compared to equipment that is worth more than £100,000 in hospitals and requires 15 trained doctors.
The application test for PEEK is still being implemented, and early results indicate that it can effectively screen for vision problems. The smartphone app can display a reduced version of the eye chart, while the flash of the phone can illuminate the fundus and retina for related diseases.
