In collaboration with biologists from the University of Queensland in Germany, Bielefeld University in Germany has successfully cultivated a kind of transgenic green algae capable of producing a large amount of hydrogen, which provides a biological pathway for the future production of hydrogen energy.
Biologists have known for a long time that green algae has a strong "hydrogen" photosynthesis function and can produce hydrogen in sunlight. However, green algae are less efficient in producing hydrogen, and usually produce only 100 ml of hydrogen per litre of green algae. The transgenic green algae cultivated by German and Australian scientists can produce 750 ml of hydrogen per litre. At present, the light hydrogen conversion value of wild green algae is about 0.1%%, artificial green algae can reach 2%% -2.4%%, if the hydrogen conversion value of the genetically modified green algae can reach 7%% -10%%, It will have practical economic application value, and scientists hope to achieve this goal within 5 to 8 years.
German and Australian biologists selected 20 samples from more than 20,000 algae samples and cultivated transgenic Chlorella named Stm6. Germany’s Ruhr University has also developed a bio-cell, a micro-bioreactor that produces green hydrogen using Chlorella, producing 5,000 hydrogen molecules per second. Thomas Haber, a professor of biochemistry at Ruhr University, said that the use of biological enzymes for the production of hydrogen has great potential. This is an interesting technology, but it will take time to really produce economic benefits.
